West African Nations Scramble to Contain Ebola Threat: Ebola is extremely rare but a very lethal infectious and deadly disease. The virus was discovered in 1976 and since then about 2,200 cases have been reported, 1,500 of them were fatal. Now health authorities believe that Ebola is responsible for 59 deaths in Guinea, Africa. They have confirmed that Ebola is responsible for the deaths of 13 people in Guinea however there is a total of 86 suspected cases and others are showing signs of the disease in neighboring countries Sierra Leone and Liberia. The virus is so contagious a 14 year old boy died from what is suspected to be Ebola (it has not been confirmed whether or not he had the disease) after going to the funeral of another suspected victim of Ebola. The World Health Organization and the U.S. firm Metabiota are helping to investigate and control the outbreak.
ReplyDeleteMuslims Stuck in C. African Republic: About 4,000 Muslims are trapped in Boda, one of the largest Muslim communities in Central African Republic. Christian militia fighters known as the anti-Balaka want every Muslim to leave, however the United Nations says that 15,000 Muslims are “in an extremely dangerous and untenable situation”. In Bangui thousands of Muslims who haven’t left yet do not leave their neighborhoods. Others have found shelter in a Catholic church and cannot even let their children play, as it puts them in danger of wondering off and being attacked. A senior crisis adviser with Amnesty International says the people want to leave but couldn’t because they couldn’t afford it and now there is simply no way of transportation.
ReplyDeleteCongo Boat Accident: A boat capsized Saturday, on Lake Albert between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than 100 people drowned, most of them children. There may have been up to 250 people onboard and overcrowded boats are a common cause of death on Lake Albert. The passengers on the boat were refugees trying to return to their home in Congo after leaving the Kyangwali settlement camp (in western Uganda). Uganda is a major refugee-hosting country in the region, especially since conflicts broke out in South Sudan last year and many fled to Uganda. This has led to overcrowding in transit centers and refugee settlements, however in the last three months there has been a sudden increase in the number of Congolese refugees returning to Congo, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.
